Christopher A. Johnson, CFA
President and CEO
Chris co-founded Crown Capital in 2000. As president and CEO, he is responsible for directing Crown Capital investment functions, including deal origination, underwriting and portfolio management. Chris also manages client relations.
Prior to starting Crown Capital, Chris was an investment manager for Crown Life Insurance Company. In this role, he was responsible for the investment management of Crown Life’s equity and fixed income investments, asset liability management, and derivative management.
Chris has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Guelph and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Brent G. Hughes, CFA
Executive Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer
Brent joined Crown Capital in 2001 and leads the company’s origination efforts.
Prior to joining Crown Capital, Brent was an investment analyst at Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation.
Brent has a Bachelor of Commerce (Great Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan and an M.Sc. in Finance from Concordia University, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Tim Oldfield, CA, CPA, CFA, CBV
Senior Vice President, Chief Investment Officer
Tim joined Crown Capital in 2015, assuming responsibility for investment underwriting and portfolio management. Tim has over 15 years of experience in transaction due diligence, mergers & acquisitions, capital advisory, financial analysis and modeling, and business valuations. Prior to joining Crown, Tim was a Partner in the Corporate Finance group at Grant Thornton LLP, where he led the due diligence team in Southern Ontario.
In addition to having his CA/CPA designation, Tim holds the Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Business Valuator designations.
Michael Overvelde, CA, CPA, CFA
Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer
Michael joined Crown in 2017 to manage the company’s financial reporting and expand capital markets relationships and activities.
Michael has more than 25 years of experience in capital markets and accounting. He was most recently Vice President, Equity Research Analyst at Raymond James covering the Canadian Diversified Financials sector. His equity research experience also includes roles at TD Securities and UBS Securities Canada. Michael previously held several senior institutional equity sales positions and worked at Ernst & Young as Audit Manager. Michael obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University before becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant. He also earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Paul Budovitch, JD, MBA
Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer
Paul joined Crown Capital in 2019 to manage operations throughout the organization and help guide partners through transformational periods.
As both a corporate lawyer and manager, Paul has a broad range of legal, financial and operational experience, with a focus on private equity, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, cost savings opportunities, restructurings and other strategic initiatives. Prior to joining Crown Capital, Paul was most recently a member of the private equity group at Torys LLP and a Vice President of a private investment company where he managed various portfolio company transactions.
Paul earned JD and MBA degrees from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from McGill University.
Brian Mellum, CFA
Senior Vice President, Energy
Brian joined Crown Capital’s Calgary office in 2015 to lead business development, with a focus on the energy sector.
Brian’s extensive industry experience includes being co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Toscana Capital Corporation, a Calgary-based merchant banking firm that specialized in mezzanine debt financing to mid-size private and public companies in Western Canada.
Brian has a BComm (Finance and Marketing) from the University of Calgary and also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Daniella Gan, CPA, CA
Vice President, Finance
Daniella, who joined Crown in 2018 as Vice President, Finance, manages the company’s financial reporting and analysis and provides support to the investment team.
Prior to joining Crown Capital, Daniella was a Senior Manager in the Financial Services audit practice at KPMG LLP in Toronto, where she spent more than seven years working on audit and advisory engagements for leading Canadian financial institutions.
Daniella obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and holds the CPA, CA designation.
Adam Jenkins, P.Eng, CFA
Adam joined Crown Capital’s Calgary office in 2019 to grow the investment portfolio in Western Canada.
Adam is a professional engineer with over 12 years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, in both small and large cap companies. Prior to joining Crown Capital, Adam was the Vice President of Corporate Development at Marquee Energy, where he led business development and financial analysis.
Adam has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Shane Melanson, CPA, CA
Shane joined Crown Capital full time in 2010 in the role of Controller. Prior to joining Crown, Shane was President and CEO of a management and accounting company and Controller for Deer Valley Golf Corporation.
Shane has an Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Saskatchewan and holds the Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
Jordan McMullen, CFA
Jordan joined Crown Capital in 2012. As Investment Manager, Jordan is responsible for investment underwriting and portfolio management. Prior to joining Crown Capital, Jordan was the general manager of a manufacturing company from 2008 to 2012. Jordan also has 8 years of experience in a range of roles at Nesel Fast Freight Inc, a logistics and transportation company.
Jordan has an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Josh Axler, MBA
Josh joined Crown in May 2017 as an Investment Associate. Previously, Josh was a Commercial Banking Associate at CIBC. Josh has also worked in business development roles with Hay Group and Xerox.
Josh has a Bachelor of Arts, Honours Business Administration (HBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Ivey Business School at Western University. Josh is a Level 3 CFA candidate
